Our client, MCL IT Services, is seeking an IT Technician to support their growing business! They are seeking a Technician with a diverse IT background and skill set and who is ready to be challenged to broaden their knowledge and skills even further.

About the Role

The IT Technician role is designed to support growth and is integral in helping to build and maintain customer relationships by delivering quality solutions to clients. The ideal candidate is eager for a challenge, thorough, responsible and obsessed with mastering a new quality of work. An ideal candidate would be someone who is a team player, passionate about what they do, and are able to communicate effectively with clients and colleagues.

The role is a full-time (32-40 hrs./week) temp-to-perm position. Permanent employment will be offered to the right candidate following a 90-day probation period. As well, as time and training continues, this role may be expanded with new opportunities and there will be an opportunity to move into a Senior Technician position (as experience is gained and business needs change).

This position would require onsite work at the MCL office in Edmonton as frequent collaboration with other IT consultants, Technicians, administrative staff, and management is required. MCL strives to offer the ability for employees to set their own hours and availability when possible.

job accountabilities

Desktop Support:

  • Support end-users with a variety of issues from desktop through infrastructure.

  • Advanced knowledge and troubleshooting of common user applications (Office 2010/2013/2016, Firefox/Chrome/IE, etc.).

Installation and Migration:

  • Setup and support solutions for local and offsite backup, wireless for small and large buildings, single or clustered edge security appliances, network switching, VLANs, subnets and routing.

  • Terminate and test structured cabling.

  • Migrate clients of all sizes to cloud services (e.g. 365, virtual servers, etc.), and new domains and servers

Server and Storage:

  • Assemble and deploy new server and storage equipment.

  • Server troubleshooting with the ability to picture the entire environment and suggest the plans that can be implemented.

  • Build and maintain Active-directory and VMWare virtual infrastructure.

Other Technologies:

  • Implement new IPSEC and SSL VPN solutions for branch and remote access

  • Design and build scripts to help automate tasks (PowerShell, Linux, PHP, etc.)

  • Work with various technologies current and new (SharePoint, Lync, Hyper-V, Office 365)

Project Management:

  • In consultation with the client, define and improve system needs and specifications for new implementations based on analysis of business needs regarding work flows, access, information and security and bring up with the team.

  • Assist sales with drafting proposals and researching projects costs for small projects.

  • Identify and present improvement areas within customers’ businesses and report to sales.

  • Plan/Implement small to complex projects.

  • Technical Support:  Address day-to-day issues identified by systems or team; Identify weaknesses in client systems, which must be addressed, and present them as solutions to the client; Assist the entire technical team with whatever tasks are required to support customers and internal systems, including minor and major upgrades.

  • Team Collaboration: helping less experienced staff with escalations and training on all devices, and other technical teams when they are overloaded; sharing useful information with other members of the technical team to provide common base of understanding for all clients and solutions supported.

  • Communication: Actively listening to client needs, hearing problems experienced and presenting solutions towards positive outcomes, resulting in potential sales opportunities; Communication with clients and team in a clear and well articulated manner.  Must be able to speak to individuals, as well as small and large groups with ease, and more importantly, use professional plain language that they can understand.

  • Excellence in tasks, updates, client communication and business process; consistency in reporting, tracking and business process.

  • Technical Documentation: Ability to assist in development of written IT processes, procedures and best practices or solutions.

  • Project Management: Manage and support projects with assigned team(s); Quote, setup, and deliver hardware and licensing, working with the sales team.

  • Prioritization: Appropriate follow up on tasks based on a client-focused approach (i.e. business impacting first, time sensitive for client and waiting on others, shipping, etc.), thinking beyond next step to outcomes and long-term solutions.

experience requirements and qualifications

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of professional and diverse experience as Junior Technician.

  • Experience setting up, deploying, joining, and supporting PCs in an active-directory environment.

  • Experience working in a IT Help Desk model.

  • Working with Virtualization Hyper-V, VMware.

  • Working with various Disaster Recovery, Business Continuity solutions.

  • Experience with Office 365 suite of services (Exchange Online, SharePoint, OneDrive, etc.) and basic understanding of cloud services.

  • Experience with working in a team and mentoring/coaching junior team members.

  • Planning and implementing small to complex projects.

  • Project costing and proposal preparation.

  • Setup, management and maintenance of RAID and NAS equipment.

  • Experience with programming languages. Using command-line and scripting (PowerShell, batch scripts, etc.).

  • Experience in designing, implementing and troubleshooting networks of various sizes including working with VLANs, Subnets, Switches, and Routers.

  • Wireless standards and technologies (802.11g/n/ac).

  • Exposure to:

    • Microsoft Exchange Server 2010/2013

    • Microsoft SQL 2008/2012

    • SharePoint

    • Terminal Services/RAS

  • Certifications:

    • CompTIA A+

    • Relevant MCSA and/or MCSE and other industry certifications are desirable.

  • Valid Class 5 drivers license and vehicle is required to make client visits. Travel is minimal (2-3 client visits per month).
